From Workshop to Hallmark: How LwLeatherworking Earned the Made in Britain Mark
Share
There's a moment in every maker's journey when you stop and ask yourself: does the work I'm doing actually stand for something? For us, that question led to one of the most rewarding decisions we've made — applying for the official Made in Britain mark.
What Is the Made in Britain Mark?
The Made in Britain organisation is a government-recognised, not-for-profit collective that certifies products genuinely manufactured in Great Britain. Their trademark — a clean, modern take on the Union flag — isn't just a sticker. It's a verified statement of origin, backed by a formal application process and ongoing membership standards.
For a small leatherworking workshop like ours, where every belt, wallet, and accessory is cut, stitched, and finished by hand in the UK, it felt like a natural fit.
Why We Applied
We've always been transparent about how and where our goods are made. Our leather is sourced from British and European tanneries, our tools are traditional, and our workshop is right here in the UK. But in a market flooded with "handmade-style" products manufactured overseas, we wanted a recognised, independent mark that customers could trust at a glance.
The Made in Britain mark does exactly that. It removes ambiguity. When you see it on one of our pieces, you know.
The Application Process
Applying was more straightforward than we expected, though it does require you to be prepared with some documentation.
Step 1: Check Eligibility
The first thing we did was review the eligibility criteria at madeinbritain.org. The core requirement is that your product must undergo its last substantial change in Great Britain — meaning the manufacturing or transformation process that gives the product its essential character must happen here. For us, that's the cutting, skiving, stitching, burnishing, and finishing — all done in our UK workshop.
Step 2: Complete the Online Application
The application form is available directly on the Made in Britain website. It asks for:
i) Business details and contact information
ii) A description of your products and manufacturing process
iii) Evidence that your goods are made in Britain (photos of your workspace, process shots, supplier information)
iv) Your website URL and social media presence
We took time to write a clear, honest description of our end-to-end process — from hide to finished product — and submitted process photography showing the workshop in action.
Step 3: Review and Verification
After submission, the Made in Britain team reviewed our application. They assess whether your manufacturing genuinely qualifies and may follow up with questions. We received a request for a little more detail on our supply chain, which we were happy to provide.
Step 4: Approval and Membership
A few weeks after applying, we received confirmation — we'd been accepted. Membership includes a licence to use the official marque across your products, packaging, website, and marketing materials, along with access to the member directory and community.
What It Means for Our Customers
When you buy from LwLeatherworking, you're investing in something made to last — by hand, in Britain. The Made in Britain mark is now our promise made visible. It's independent verification that we're not cutting corners on origin, quality, or craft.
We're proud to carry it, and we hope it gives you even more confidence when you choose one of our pieces.
Thinking of Applying?
If you're a British maker or manufacturer and you've been on the fence about applying, we'd encourage you to go for it. The process is thorough but fair, the community is genuinely supportive, and the mark carries real weight with consumers who care about provenance.
